Attorney is also Recognized for Pro-Bono Efforts Assisting Families of 9/11
Philadelphia attorney Richard Golomb was elected to a second three-year term on the board of the governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA). Golomb was elected to the prestigious position at ATLA’s July 2004 meeting in Boston.
“It’s a great pleasure to have the opportunity to serve ATLA once again,” says Golomb. “We represent 60,000 trial lawyers across the country and in Central and South America, Puerto Rico, and elsewhere. These are people who are working hard to fight for the rights of victims and consumers throughout the Americas. These leading advocates protect victim and consumer rights at every level and in a wide array of pro-bono activities, especially after 9/11.”
In November 2004, Golomb earned a citation of excellence from ATLA for his work as part of the organization’s Trial Lawyers Care project—the largest pro-bono effort in the history of American jurisprudence.
In the wake of 9/11, ATLA passed a resolution declaring a moratorium on lawsuits against American airlines and companies in the wake of 9/11, and also mounted a massive effort to assist the families of 9/11 victims in collecting from the victim’s compensation fund. More than 2100 attorneys assisted in the effort, commemorated in the book Thousands of Heroes (for more information see http://www.atla.org/homepage/TLC.aspx).
The ATLA award honors Golomb for his work representing 9/11 families. One of the families he represented had a complicated case that resulted in a full hearing, where Golomb succeeded in helping them secure an award of more than $1.5 million.
