Yasmin and Yaz are two popular birth control pills manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals that have been connected to severe and potentially fatal side-effects.
The Philadelphia dangerous drug attorneys at Golomb & Honik are evaluating claims from women in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and across the United States who were harmed by Yasmin or Yaz, both of which were marketed with misleading advertising that understated the risks associated with the drugs.
Differences Between Yasmin and Yaz
Yasmin received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2001 as an oral contraceptive. Yasmin is similar to Yaz in composition and purpose, although it contains a lesser amount of ethinyl estradiol, a form of estrogen used in numerous birth control pills.
Yaz was approved by the FDA in 2006 for birth control, but it has also been used in the treatment of moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of premenstrual syndrome.
Both drugs have since been linked to similar and sometimes deadly health complications.
Side-Effects of Yasmin and Yaz
Medical problems associated with Yasmin and Yaz include:
- Blood clots
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Gallbladder disease
- Heart attack
- Kidney damage
- Liver damage
- Pancreatitis
- Pulmonary embolism
- Stroke
Bayer was warned by the FDA in 2003 and again in 2008 to change television advertisements that minimized the potential adverse effects of Yasmin and Yaz. Although the company eventually altered its advertising campaign, awareness of the risks linked to Yasmin and Yaz came too late for many women.
