Hip Implant Attorneys

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Nationwide

Metal-on-metal hip implants were once touted as being stronger than their traditional counterparts, thus leading to reduced failure rates and revision surgery. As a result, more than 500,000 patients received these metal-on-metal hip implants, including numerous patients under the age of 55. Since 2009, however, all metal hip implants have been the subject of numerous recalls, thousands of injuries, and even deaths.

The Philadelphia product liability attorneys at Golomb & Honik are currently investigating complaints regarding metal-on-metal hip implants. If you or someone you love has suffered medical complications or required painful revision surgery after receiving a metal-on-metal hip implant, call us at 1-800-355-3300 or 1-215-985-9177 immediately to evaluate your case.

Metal Hip Implants and Recalls

In 2008, Zimmer Holdings announced the suspension of their popular Durom hip implant series, amidst complaints of injury, premature failure, and health complications. DePuy followed a few years later with the highly publicized recall of their popular ASR Acetabular Hip Implants.

By 2011, the FDA began to order hip implant manufacturers to conduct medical studies after concerns that these metal implants were shedding dangerously high levels of metal ions into patients’ bloodstream and tissues.

In 2012, Stryker and Smith & Nephew recalled their metal-on-metal hip implant devices after numerous complaints of premature failure and pain in the hip joint. This included Stryker’s Rejuvenate and ABG II hip systems and Smith & Nephew’s R3 Acetabular System.

In 2013 the FDA required all metal-on-metal hip implant manufacturers to prove that their devices were safe prior to continuation of sales.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Complications

Metal-on metal hip implants have been associated with numerous medical complications and health issues including:

  • Bone deterioration and loss
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Decreased mobility
  • Pain and difficulty sitting and/or standing
  • Inflammation and swelling at joint
  • Joint dislocation
  • Clicking and popping in joint when moving
  • Metallosis
  • Formation of cysts
  • Infection at implant site
  • Hip fractures
  • Severe pain and discomfort
  • Heart attacks
  • Nerve complications, such as numbness or weakness
  • Death

The most common complication associated with all-metal hip implants is bone deterioration or loss in and around the hip implant. In fact, this is responsible for nearly 75% of all hip implant failures. When a hip implant fails, patients are left with little alternative except to undergo painful revision surgery. Revision surgery alone is risky and 2.5% of all hip implant patients died while undergoing a revision surgery to correct a faulty or defective hip.
